Crack Injection vs. Curtain Grouting: What's the Difference?

When you're faced with a leak in a below-grade wall, foundation, or tunnel, injection grouting can often stop the water without having to excavate.
But there's more than one way to do it.
Two common methods are crack injection and curtain grouting. Both involve injecting resin under pressure to stop water infiltration, but they go about it in very different ways.
Crack injection targets a specific crack, joint, or leak. Curtain grouting creates a broader waterproof barrier behind your structure.
Here's how each works, where each makes sense, and where it doesn't.

Best for Isolated, Identifiable Cracks
How It Works
Crack injection is the more targeted of the two methods.
If water is coming through an identifiable crack, construction joint, failed waterstop, or similar opening, resin can be injected directly into it to stop the flow of water.
A contractor drills holes at a 45-degree angle so they intersect the crack inside the wall or slab. Mechanical packers are then inserted into the holes, and resin is injected under pressure. From there, the resin travels into the crack and surrounding voids, where it reacts and cures to form a waterproof seal.
The goal is to fill the crack from within rather than simply sealing it at the surface.

Why Use Crack Injection?
For starters, it's localized. If you can pinpoint where water is getting in, you likely don't need to treat the entire wall. You can focus your repair on the crack or joint that's actually causing the problem.
Let's say you have a below-grade parking garage wall with one active vertical crack. The rest of the wall is sound and there's no widespread water infiltration. You probably don't need to waterproof the entire wall. You can inject the crack and address the problem where it is.
Another advantage is that crack injection can be performed from inside the structure, which is useful for below-grade areas where excavation would be difficult, expensive, or flat-out impossible.
When to Use Crack Injection

Since the resin goes exactly where the crack is, this method works best when the source of the leak is easy to locate.
Common applications include:
Cracks in concrete or masonry
Construction and cold joints
Failed waterstops
Floor-to-wall joints
Active water leaks
Fine or hairline cracks
Cracks with surrounding voids
When NOT to Use Crack Injection
Sometimes the crack you see isn't the entire problem. Water can move behind a wall and find its way through multiple cracks, joints, porous masonry, or other weak points. When that happens, you might inject one crack successfully only to have water show up three feet away.
If the leak is widespread or you can't isolate where the water is coming from, treating cracks one by one make not make sense.
That's where curtain grouting comes in.

How It Works
Instead of chasing individual cracks, curtain grouting takes a broader approach.

Contractors drill holes and install packers in a diamond grid pattern across the area being treated, and inject resin in a coordinated sequence.
The resin then spreads and cures behind the structure to form a continuous barrier, or "curtain", that blocks the flow of water.
You're essentially creating a new waterproofing layer from inside your structure.
This approach works well on masonry and rubble wall foundations where isolating and treating a single leak path is often difficult or impossible. It's also useful on existing below-grade structures where the original waterproofing membrane has failed but accessing it would mean excavating around the building.

Why Use Curtain Grouting?
The biggest advantage is coverage. Curtain grouting can address a much larger area with multiple potential leak paths.
Think about an elevator pit where there isn't one obvious crack causing the problem. Instead, you're seeing damp areas across the wall or leaks that show up in different places every time it rains. Trying to find and inject every individual leak pathway can quickly turn into a game of whack-a-mole.
Curtain grouting takes the opposite approach. Instead of chasing individual leaks, you create a barrier behind the structure to control water across a broader area.
That makes it a good fit for older masonry foundations, which can contain interconnected joints, cracks, voids, and porous areas that give water plenty of ways in.
And like crack injection, curtain grouting can be performed from the interior. That can eliminate the need for costly, disruptive, and sometimes impractical exterior excavation.
When to Use Curtain Grouting
Curtain grouting can be used on below-grade walls, elevator pits, tunnels, masonry foundations, and other structures where:

Leaks occur across a broad area
There are multiple or difficult-to-pinpoint entry points
Exterior waterproofing has failed
Exterior excavation isn't practical
Water is migrating behind a below-grade wall
The substrate contains widespread cracks, joints, or irregularities
A secondary water barrier is needed behind an existing structure
When NOT to Use Curtain Grouting
If you're dealing with one clearly defined crack in otherwise sound concrete, curtain grouting may be excessive.
So, Which Approach Should You Use?
If the leak is localized and you can clearly identify the pathway of water, crack injection is often your best bet.
If water is entering across a broad area, the pathways are difficult to isolate, or the exterior waterproofing has failed, curtain grouting may be more appropriate.
Of course, there's some overlap.
Take a wall with map cracking, for example. If you have a handful of leaking cracks, you may be able to inject them individually, but if the entire wall is covered in interconnected cracks and water is showing up in multiple places, treating every crack individually may not be practical. At that point, curtain grouting may make more sense.
What About the Resin?
Once you know how you're going to stop the leak, you still need to decide what you're going to inject.
There's no universal resin for either method. Choosing the right chemistry depends a lot on the conditions you're dealing with. Soil conditions, groundwater pressure, voids, wall construction, and injection spacing can all affect how the grout flows and cures, which makes planning important.
For crack injection, crack width, movement, moisture, and surrounding voids all influence resin selection. A fine moving crack needs something very different from a large, relatively stable crack with a void behind it.
For curtain grouting, resin travel becomes especially important. The resin has to move beyond the injection point and spread behind the structure to create a continuous barrier.
